Hi
I have had horses forever and am considering an Exie. We live near-ish Exmoor and I would love to support the breed. But I am tall and have always favoured TBs (don't hold it against me!). My little daughter has a dartie and I would like something to lead her from (the others we have are not sensible enough!).
I have read that the big Exies can carry big adults but at 5'10" would I just look stupid? And lots of people say they are difficult obviously you all love them but can you give me any pros and cons.
Thanks all

You would need to have a go on a couple of the 12.2hh+ Exmoors, see how it feels.I ride and lead of mine all the time. But after riding bigger horses it will take a little adjustment.Advantages include getting on and off,and considerably cheaper to keep.Have a go.

Do your research ,go and see some & their owners . They are different , opinionated and sometimes unforgiving ( I mean the ponies ! ) But they are also the most wonderful breed to own .

I agree with what's been said - going from a big horse to an Exie is a bit of a shock to the system at first but in truth, I rode our TB the other week for the first time in ages and hated it!!! Couldn't wait to get back on the Exmoors! I ride and lead from both our ridden Exies (have another 2 youngsters and a foal due to arrive in Oct!) and find them much more sensible when they are doing this than if I just hack them out myself! They know when they have a job to do and seem to knuckle down to get it done They are cheeky, loyal and truly do live on fresh air - we are near Bristol if you are Bristol side of Exmoor you are more than welcome to come visit - there are lots of Exies around this area

Thank you everyone. Anyone who rides Exies can I ask how tall you are?
I've been thinking about it since going to the Mousie Moorland Trust this spring- I hadn't realised that riding them would be an option for me until then. And now my daughters riding is really taking off I am getting bored of running her on the lead rein while my horse stands in the field!
Thank you jenbacon that is really kind I will get in touch if I am visiting that area- we are south of you.

What about going back to MMT both Yorrick and Dylan are big 12.2 and we are really quiet at this time of year until half term that is! You could have a go and see what you think. I have a 12.1 exmoor and a 6' 1 bloke rode her and looked big but not silly and she was fine its more about weight than height for them

As long as the pony can carry your weight no problem that's the main thing. People will probably jump on me for saying this but I do think it looks daft when a rider's feet dangle below the bottom of the pony's sides. Balance can also be an issue, I'm 5'3" and my smaller Exmoor is just 12hh and I always feel I have to work quite hard to stay in the right place on him, I've never had this issue on anything larger. I do think it depends on the individual though - some people are long in the body and others are long in the leg, so it's a good idea to ride a few larger Exmoors and see how you get on.

jrogers you read my mind! I need to sort childcare and will try to get back to MMT. Do you know if shorter (1hr) rides are an option? I saw on the website half-day treks but think I would struggle to get that much free time!
lou is the pony in your avatar 12hh? Imagining 7" more on the rider doesn't seem like a good look!

Hopefully I can post a link here to a photo.... This is a pic of a variet of adults pplus a teenager, on exmoor ponies ranging from 12hh to 12.2hh. Hopefully no one will mind me posting it! I am 5ft 7 and my exmoor mare is 12.1. She is in this pic with a different rider. She has quite a low head acarraige but once you are used to it she is SUCH fun!! Cheap to keep, easy to do and still going string at 26yrs!
